Government backbenchers are urging Scott Morrison to pursue a free trade agreement with Taiwan, despite the likelihood it will anger China and trigger a further deterioration in relations.

Queensland Liberal MP Ted O'Brien, a former executive and consultant who lived and worked in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong for years before entering Parliament, said other countries had negotiated deals with Taiwan without suffering China's wrath.
