Australians aged over 55 to get welfare boost

The long-term unemployed aged over 55 will be a focus of welfare increases in the May 9 federal budget with other age groups having to wait.

A report by Channel Seven, which the government did not reject, said an initial modest increase to the $50-a-day payment would be confined to people aged over 55 who had been unemployed for a long time. This would predominantly help women who are vulnerable and who have poor employment prospects.
