ATO has ‘stuffed’ robo-tax debt recovery effort: ombudsman
The independent tax ombudsman has slammed the ATO for its handling of an estimated $15 billion in debts from small business and individuals, warning that government agencies must be transparent in chasing unpaid money and not cause unnecessary distress.
In a scheme quickly likened to the illegal robo-debt saga, the Tax Office unexpectedly began pursuing debts previously considered on hold or historical in late 2023, ranging from tiny amounts to tens of thousands of dollars, and sometimes dating back many years.
