Australia has secured a far-reaching defence pact with Indonesia, locking in deeper military ties with another key Asian power as a hedge against China’s regional assertiveness.

A quarter of a century after Australian peacekeepers risked clashing with Indonesian troops in East Timor, the new Defence Cooperation Agreement will streamline how Australian and Indonesian forces operate in each other’s country and ramp up joint exercises.
