Albanese flags win on climate talks but tariffs, Ukraine unresolved

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has hinted Australia is close to securing hosting rights for the next United Nations’ climate conference, but the potential commitment of peacekeepers to Ukraine and the threat of fresh US tariffs still hang over the government as the caretaker period begins.

Foreign affairs and security will feature more prominently than usual during the election campaign and could intrude as early as next week, when Donald Trump is promising to unveil reciprocal tariffs on a slew of trading partners in what he has dubbed “Liberation Day”.
