‘A lot of pseudo-science’: The problem with schools
Australia’s school education system has a fundamentally flawed element: teaching is treated like an art, not a science.
In its first two years, over 6000 teachers signed up for one of three short courses at La Trobe University that teach the science of language and reading.
Another 700 have already signed on for the first round of courses in 2023. Roughly speaking, that’s about 2 per cent of Australia’s teaching workforce who have voluntarily enrolled in a course that teaches them how to teach reading and writing.
