It says a lot about the unseriousness of the Australian Republican Movement that left-wing sports personalities like Peter FitzSimons or Craig Foster are thought to be the right people to lead all of Australia to history-making constitutional changes. They simply demonstrate the movement’s inability to think beyond an inner-city elite and reach millions of Australians who must be enthused if Australia is to become a republic.
