Taxpayers were facing a blowout to almost $65 billion for the troubled future frigate project, forcing the Albanese government to cut the number of warships it orders so that smaller vessels can be prioritised to double the size of the navy’s surface fighting fleet.
The near $20 billion blowout to build nine submarine-hunting frigates in Adelaide has been revealed on the eve of Defence Minister Richard Marles unveiling his plan on Tuesday to dramatically boost the navy’s firepower.
