The NSW Nationals claimed victory in a byelection in the key seat of Upper Hunter on Saturday that Premier Gladys Berejiklian had promised would bolster strong and stable government in the state.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro declared “the Nats are back” after candidate Dave Layzell looked headed for victory with nearly 45 per cent of the vote counted at 9pm AEST on Saturday.
