Comalco Ltd's commitment to the location of a new $1 billion alumina refinery is at least six months away with the company to complete a feasibility study comparing competing sites in Malaysia and Queensland.

Comalco chief executive Mr Terry Palmer said yesterday a preliminary energy agreement was about to be signed in Malaysia which would trigger the feasibility study.
