Vanguard is hoping for a big increase in superannuation members when advisers start selling its fledgling option later this year as a low-cost competitor to industry funds, as it also looks for merger partners to help boost numbers.

The investment management giant opened its super fund to the public six months ago, dividing financial advisers and analysts on its chances of disrupting the $3.4 trillion retirement savings market.
