Chief justice intervenes in tax plan for judges

Federal Court Chief Justice Debbie Mortimer has attacked plans to include judicial pensions in a tax overhaul of large superannuation accounts, saying it could hurt the integrity of the court and its ability to recruit the best candidates.

In a surprising intervention for a sitting judge, the chief justice said past and current judges were “all concerned about the way the proposed Division 296 tax will affect judicial pensions”.
