Virologists track omicron mutant as Hong Kong deaths hit record highs

Virologists and analysts are closely watching an omicron mutation prevalent in Hong Kong as death rates in the previously COVID-zero metropolis surge to the highest in the world.

There have been 1790 deaths in Hong Kong’s omicron wave, 86 per cent of them among those aged over 70. Strict COVID-19 elimination policies until mid-February had kept total deaths across the pandemic to just 224.
