Australia is now waiting for the vaccine science not only to deliver the nation from the plague, but also to inoculate it against medieval lockdowns and state border closures.

A year ago, medical experts were warning that maybe it couldn’t be done. With highly advanced modern medicine unable to cure the common cold, the odds appeared to be against scientists rapidly unravelling the mysteries of the novel coronavirus and inventing a safe and effective vaccine.

A year on, multiple vaccines have been developed by teams of researchers working in unison across the globe, and millions of doses manufactured by global drug giants are being administered each day.
