Hallucinations have been a recorded part of the human experience since ancient times. Greek philosopher Socrates heard a voice that he interpreted as divine. Renowned Greco-Roman physician Aretaeus of Cappadocia described hallucinations as part of delirium: “The senses are perverted, so that they see things not present as if they were present, and objects which do not appear to others, manifest themselves to them.”
