Disease has brought the new politics of benign paternalism
Even in democratic nations, COVID-19 has fostered faith in the government knowing how best to protect us.

To succeed required a strongly paternalist public culture, leading to predictions that countries such as Singapore (in the semi-democratic club) and China (in the authoritarian one) would meet the challenge best.
