One of the challenges of being a parent is that you are never quite sure what is considered “normal" behaviour for a child. As far as my wife and I knew, our daughter Camille, who was born in early 2009, was hitting all her milestones: she slept and ate well and at 15 months had 10 to 12 intelligible words.

It is only with hindsight that we recognise her seemingly reserved nature was more than a personality trait.
