We let China rig the trade system and now we’re paying for it

Beijing’s pervasive and predatory trade practices have distorted global manufacturing for almost two decades and undermined faith in the multilateral trading system.

In regional towns and cities across Australia, from Mount Isa, Port Pirie, Hobart and Tomago, minerals processing businesses employing thousands of Australians are on their knees.

In some cases, they have weeks to survive. They are the victim of a sustained breakdown in the global trading system. But the primary culprit is not US President Donald Trump, though his damaging and counterproductive tariff policy is likely to have made things worse.
