Why a visit to the panda enclosure is never just about pandas

During the Cold War, China gave pandas to strategic allies. Now it loans them out, but isn’t afraid to use them as punishment.

Chengdu, China | If Anthony Albanese walked in Gough Whitlam’s footsteps on the Great Wall of China on Wednesday, his visit to Chengdu’s panda research and breeding centre on Thursday followed Bob Hawke’s visit in 1986.

The political symbolism was strong as Albanese wrote another chapter in Labor’s claim as the Australian party best able to handle China.
