The national emissions target is a solid basis for much stronger climate policy. Its midpoint should be seen as the real goal to achieve, not some lofty ambition that might fall by the wayside.
An emissions reduction in the mid-60s will put Australia on track to net zero and help position the economy for long-term international competitiveness. It means cutting emissions levels by half completed to today, in just a decade. This is possible if strong action is taken quickly and right across the board.
