Greenland is losing more ice than we thought
The additional loss comes from an area previously unaccounted for in estimates: ice lost at a glacier’s edges.
The Greenland ice sheet has lost 20 per cent more ice than scientists previously thought, posing potential problems for ocean circulation patterns and sea levels, a study has found.
Researchers had previously estimated that the Greenland ice sheet lost about 5000 gigatons of ice in recent decades, enough to cover the US state of Texas in a sheet almost 8 metres high. The new estimate adds 1000 gigatons to that period.
