The immediate costs of the bushfires will be hefty. The bill will get bigger if climate change is not addressed.

Australia’s characteristic resilience has been dashed against the reality of a hostile climate. Now is surely the time for us to take stock and find ways to minimise the risk of such disasters in the future.
Part of this will involve understanding that these fires are not just a humanitarian problem, they are an economic one as well.
