The political challenge for the Albanese government on climate change is to reflect the ideological ambition of inner-city progressives while containing cost-of-living pressures on everyone else.

Until now, it has straddled this tricky political divide by promising an economic fantasy: that spending hundreds of billions of dollars on a new renewables-based grid would deliver both cheaper electricity and environmental salvation.
