Earlier this year, Boral waved the white flag on its carbon emission reduction target over the next few years. Concrete, chief executive Vik Bansal argued, was one of the most carbon-intensive industries, and strong demand meant there was little hope that emissions will be falling any time soon.

Denis Wagner disagrees. As one of four brothers who control Queensland-headquartered building materials company Wagners, he is in a position to propose an alternative. The only thing is – there is not much interest.
