It might seem longer to voters but it's less than three years ago that new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull launched his innovation agenda and his vision of an agile economy propelled by world-class research and development.

Given Tony Abbott had effectively banned the use of the term "innovation" in government circles, this was meant to encourage the change required for Australian business to adapt to a competitive world.
