Wellington | New Zealand police said 49 people were dead and more than 20 people seriously injured after a shooter opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch on Friday, in what the country's prime minister called an "act of extreme violence".
The deadliest attack occurred at the Al Noor mosque in the centre of the city, where 41 people were killed. Seven more were shot dead at the Linwood mosque on the other side of the city. Police said another victim died in hospital. Police also defused explosive devices in a car.
