Susan Kiefel takes top High Court role, James Edelman appointed

High Court judge Susan Kiefel will replace outgoing Robert French as chief justice in the new year, becoming the first woman to occupy the nation's most senior judicial role in the court's 113-year history.
Justice Kiefel said that she wanted to lead a court that continued to be collegiate and maintain the confidence of the other arms of government and the community.
