The Morrison government has mounted a temporary retreat over plans to forcibly divest energy companies and withdrawn the "big stick" legislation from Parliament ahead of scheduled debate today.
With support for the bill in the lower house appearing to have collapsed, the government has abandoned the legislation and will instead take it to the election.
