Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says former deputy Liberal leader and foreign minister Julie Bishop remains in the frame for a government job if she wants one, leaving open the prospect of sending her to Washington DC as Australian ambassador.

Mr Shorten also revealed he would dispatch his likely foreign minister, Penny Wong, on a tour of Asian capitals within weeks of taking power to show the region there was a new government and it was eager to engage.
