Treasurer Scott Morrison says the medical industry's opposition to the government's cuts to pathology and diagnostic imaging funding is motivated by commercial interests, as Labor, Greens and independent senators raise doubts over whether the $640 million spending reduction will succeed in Parliament.
The government wants to reduce or remove bulk-billing for some pathology and diagnostic imaging services, arguing the subsidy is passed on to companies, not consumers, and could save taxpayers $197 million from 2016-17.
