Generations of Australians trained to think that the road to higher earnings runs through a so-called sandstone university may need to think again.

University graduates enjoy much higher incomes - the higher the degree the better - but graduates of the prestigious "Group of 8" universities do not enjoy the highest incomes, the Household Income and Labour Dynamics Australia (HILDA) survey finds.
