Federal Nationals MPs have chosen Veterans' Affairs Minister Michael McCormack to replace Barnaby Joyce as the party's leader and deputy prime minister.

Mr McCormack was elected after defeating high-profile Queensland MP George Christensen in the Nationals' party room on Monday morning, days after Mr Joyce resigned over the ongoing scandal from his affair with a former staffer and amid new allegations of sexual harassment by a Western Australian woman.
