Coalition backbenchers, emboldened by their government's partial backdown on superannuation, are now arguing for a sugar tax and changes to other taxes including those on tobacco and backpackers.
Victorian MP Russell Broadbent challenged his colleagues to consider a new tax on sugar and changes to tobacco taxes, saying it was the only way to fund sports projects and preventative measures to halt the "major trauma" of childhood diabetes and obesity.
