China's HNA Group has been looking to expand into Australia for at least three years.

It initially approached Qantas about a potential deal but talks with the airline never progressed. Now the acquisitive group, which on its own numbers has invested $US11 billion ($15 billion) in 34 overseas deals, has turned up with a 13 per cent stake in Virgin Australia.
