Aussie steel wins tariff exemption but trade war fears grow

Australian steel and aluminium exports will be exempted from Donald Trump's tariffs following a sustained eight-month lobbying exercise by the Prime Minister, his senior ministers and key members of Australia's business community.

Although all countries that export steel and aluminium to the US have 15 days to argue for an exemption, the Turnbull government believes that process is now a formality after President Trump singled out Australia for special treatment early Friday morning (AEDT).
