Shares rally in first session after Christmas

Australian shares returned from the Christmas break to claim a 1.2 per cent rise following a mixed session on Wall Street where omicron-related news kept the US market's advance to a minimum.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index was up 89.5 points to 7509.8 points at the closing bell in the first day of trading since December 24. The Dow Jones Industrial Average held on for a fifth day of gains, up less than 0.3 per cent, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq dropped 0.1 per cent and 0.6 per cent.
