Retail ownership of big banks crashes to lowest level on record

Mum and dad investors are reducing their stakes in the country’s big banks, taking the level of retail shareholder ownership to a record low, even as hot demand from institutional money sends bank stock prices higher.

An analysis by Jarden shows retail shareholders were sellers in the big four banks in the three months to June 30, and Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank and ANZ recorded their lowest level of retail ownership.
