Fund manager Perpetual was the training ground for generations of Australian stock pickers since the 1960s. Now it faces a smaller future under a different name after making the kind of mistakes that its investment stars would once have punished others for.

After an internal review Perpetual is to break itself up, selling the wealth management and corporate trust business to private equity giant KKR for $2.18 billion.
