Australian equity investors enjoyed a solid start to 2013 as America’s evasion of recession from fiscal drag lent momentum to global sharemarkets.

The S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.1 per cent over the week, rising to a fresh 19-month high of 4740.7 on Thursday as policy makers in Washington reached an accord on various taxation and spending measures to avoid a significant contraction in the US economy.
