Merger and acquisition fever returned to the local sharemarket on Monday as Newcrest Mining’s board said it plans to accept Newmont Mining’s $26.2 billion takeover bid, with junior gold miner Genesis Mining also sweetening its bid for St Barbara’s Gwalia mine in Western Australia.

Luke McMillan said the gold sector is quite hot right now as investors mull macro risks.
