Australian shares gain amid improving US growth outlook
The ASX is down slightly at the open, despite gains on European and US markets where the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 18,000 for the first time after an unexpectedly strong report on US economic growth.
Australian shares closed a short session ahead of the Christmas holidays in positive territory, as optimism about improving economic growth in the United States outweighed the gloom of further falls in iron ore and oil markets.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index and the broader All Ordinaries Index each added about 0.25 per cent on Wednesday to 5394.5 points and 5369.5 points respectively, amid thin trading volumes.
