The Australian sharemarket closed lower on Tuesday following a quiet lead from Wall Street, due to a US public holiday, bringing a succession of record closes to an end.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index closed the session 13.2 points, or 0.19 per cent, lower at 7066.3, ending the five-day rally in which the benchmark year-to-date gains reached 5.9 per cent.
