The announcement that gas reserves were in place in Papua New Guinea to underpin long-term sales contracts in Queensland was cautiously welcomed yesterday by Comalco, other potential customers and analysts.

A Comalco spokesman said the company looked forward to resuming negotiations on the price of gas for its proposed alumina refinery in Gladstone.
