Social media age ban to come with $50m fines

Social media platforms breaching the Albanese government’s tough new age restriction rules will face fines of up to $50 million, as part of legislation set to be introduced to parliament on Thursday.
Labor wants to ban children under 16 from using popular platforms including TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. The move has been welcomed by public health advocates but questioned by technology experts and some educators.
