Over the weekend we saw the emergence of a plan, or at least the latest plan, to try to shift the government out of its torpor: a campaign-style rally with a big-spending, populist promise.

Tired of claims his government was drifting, Malcolm Turnbull once retorted: “Just because you don’t know the plan, doesn’t mean we haven’t got one.”

For the Albanese government, down in the polls and with the prime minister’s personal ratings falling, its strategy over the past few months has resembled little more than waiting for an interest rate cut, much like a drought-stricken farmer staring at the clouds.
