UN chief demands fossil fuel ban as he meets Pacific leaders

Australia and other developed nations need to immediately ban the expansion of fossil fuel industries to save the world from an “escalating climate crisis”, the head of the United Nations has told Pacific Island leaders.

As an earthquake rocked the opening day of the Pacific Islands Forum in Tonga, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged reform of multilateral development banks to free up lending to help debt-distressed countries and small island states.
