Rebel senator Fatima Payman is expected to quit Labor on Thursday to join the crossbench with the backing of Muslim groups, heightening concerns in political and intelligence circles about sectarianism creeping into politics.
The rise of sectarian, or religious-based parties, into Australian politics has MPs on both sides of the fence fretting at the potential for it to inflame both anti and pro-Muslim sentiment.
