‘Massive’ French police force arrives in riot-hit New Caledonia

Sydney / Paris | French police reinforcements have started arriving in New Caledonia as part of a major operation to regain control of the capital Noumea, the top French official in the Pacific island territory said on Friday.
Violence has raged across the French Pacific territory this week, forcing France to impose a state of emergency and dispatch extra security forces to quell unrest in the archipelago, which has long sought independence.
