We’ve all seen photos of the first programmable computers, such as the nearly 30-tonne ENIAC built during World War II, which filled an entire basement and took days to program.
In 1943, Thomas Watson, then-head of IBM, is reputed to have predicted a world market for “maybe five computers”. Did he get that wrong! Classical computers are ubiquitous, and society could not operate without them.
