Delays for major defence projects have cumulatively blown out to more than 37 years – and Defence chiefs are increasingly hiding how late some multibillion-dollar acquisitions are running because it could “damage” national security.

Following Defence Minister Richard Marles’ admission that Defence had a “way to go” before achieving excellence, the auditor-general’s scathing findings add to warnings the military is at crisis point amid heightened strategic tensions with China.
